Glossary


The following oral health topics will provide you with information and resources about various issues related to you and your family's oral health care. Select from the category listing or choose from the alphabetical listing to find a specific topic.

Abscess - A serious infection either at the tip of the root or at the side of the tooth involving the gum tissue

Abutment - A natural tooth or teeth that becomes the supporting structure for a bridge

Amalgam - A material normally used to fill back teeth


Bicuspids - Pre-molars; located between the canine teeth and the molars

Bridge - A non-removable prosthetic device used to replace missing teeth

Bruxism - Tooth grinding, often in response to stress; most often done while sleeping


Calculus - Commonly known as tartar. Cement-like deposits on teeth; cannot be removed by brushing or flossing, and must be scraped off by your dentist or hygienist

Canines - The pointed teeth that border the four front teeth (upper and lower) near the corner of the mouth

Caries - Tooth decay

Cavity - A hole left in a tooth by bacterial decay

CMT Caries Management Therapy - evaluation/non-surgical treatment; series of appointments every three months utilizing highly concentrated fluoride and other medicaments to reverse and remineralize areas of early enamel decalcification

Crown - An artificial cover for a decayed or damaged tooth

Denture (Complete) - A removable appliance that replaces all the teeth in either the upper or lower part of the mouth

Denture (Immediate) - A removable appliance that replaces all teeth and inserted as soon as the remaining teeth are removed.

Dry Socket - An inflammation of the bone, or the tissue covering the bone, associated with infection and loss of the blood clot after the removal of a tooth

Fluoride - A natural substance that helps guard teeth from decay

Molars - The teeth in the back of the mouth characterized by broad chewing surfaces

Palpation - Feeling

Partial - A removable appliance that replaces one or more teeth in either the upper or lower part of the mouth. The difference between a partial and a denture is that some teeth must be present in the mouth for the partial to hook onto

Percussion - Tapping

Perio - Around the tooth

Plaque - A sticky bacterial film that forms on teeth; combines with sugars and starches from foods to form acids that eat away at tooth enamel, causing tooth decay; also causes gum disease when allowed to accumulate around the gum tissue

Prophylaxis - Cleaning of the teeth

Pulpitis - Inflammation of the nerve

Root Canal Therapy - A procedure used to treat diseased and infected pulp (nerve) tissue. Often this treatment makes it possible to save a tooth, which otherwise would require extraction (removal).

SPT Supportive Periodontal Therapy - a series of cleaning appointments every three months utilizing ultrasonic therapy for irrigation.


TMJ Disorders - Malfunctions in the joints and the surrounding muscles that hinge the lower jaw to the skull; can cause pain in the joint region and other symptoms
