Interesting Facts About Xylitol

Willamette Dental has a variety of Spry products that contain Xylitol at all of our office locations.

Why is Xylitol special?

It is an FDA approved sugar substitute that is both anti-cavity and anti-plaque.

What is Xylitol?

Xylitol is a naturally occurring sweetener found in many fruits such as raspberries, strawberries and kiwis. Xylitol is a sugar substitute referred to as a polyol.

Why are Xylitol products special?

Xylitol when used by bacteria (StrepMutans) as a food, decreases the bacteria's ability to stick to tooth surfaces, interfering with their ability to form large colonies thus reducing their ability to form Dental Plaque. It also reduces the acid producing potential of the bacteria (StrepMutans) which is the leading cause of tooth decay according to the Acid Theory of Dental Decay.

Does it reduce Dental Plaque?

Yes. You can tell this after a few days by the smooth glassy feeling that your teeth will have when you touch them with your tongue. The feeling of smoothness is similar to that of an ice cube melting in your mouth.

Does it reduce the risk of cavities?

Yes. Studies have shown that there has been as much as an 80% reduction in tooth decay over an extended period of usage compared to groups not chewing Xylitol-containing gum.

Who should use 100% Xylitol chewing gum and/or 100% Xylitol products?

Xylitol can be used by anyone who is concerned with fighting dental decay and dental plaque. Children should begin using the gum as soon as they are old enough to chew gum responsibly. Expectant mothers (and any relatives that will have contact with the newborn) should begin using Xylitol products during the pregnancy to reduce the chance that they will pass on "bad bacteria" to the newborn child by food tasting or kissing. An ongoing study found that significantly fewer cavities occurred in the children when their mothers chewed 100% Xylitol sweetened gum during and after pregnancy.

How often do I need to use it?

Best results are achieved when 100% Xylitol products are consumed 3-5 times per day, after each meal or snack, and 1 hour before bedtime.
How long do I need to chew the gum? You need to chew it for at least 5 minutes but chewing it longer will not cause harm. You should continue using the gum and other 100% Xylitol products for as many months or years as you want to have the benefits of its cavity and plaque fighting qualities.

Are there advantages to chewing 100% Xylitol gum?

Yes. The gum may reduce bad breath, and studies have also shown that there can be up to a 40% reduction in ear infections. If your child suffers from frequent ear infections, you can further reduce their risk by using a Xylitol containing nasal wash.

Can I quit brushing and flossing my teeth?

No. You still need to maintain a good oral hygiene routine of brushing and flossing regularly.

Can I stop visiting my dentist?

No. You should maintain your regular dental visits for cleanings and fluoride treatments.

Do I need fluoride?

Yes. It is another tool that is recognized as effective against tooth decay.

Can I eat anything I want once I start using 100% Xylitol products?

No. You should still carefully watch your intake of high-density carbohydrates (sugar) and avoid sugar containing soft drinks.

Is Xylitol safe to use?

Yes. Our bodies normally produce about 15 grams of Xylitol each day. There have been no reported side effects when used as directed, 4-12 grams per day. A person who exceeds 30 grams per day may experience some lower gastrointestinal discomfort for a few days (Osmotic diarrhea) if they are sensitive individuals.

Sugarless chewing gums that are sweetened with 100% Xylitol can do amazing things for the health of the teeth and gums.

When sugarless chewing gum sweetened with 100% xylitol is chewed consistently 3-5 times a day on a daily basis for 5-10 minutes each time research shows that:

Cavities can be prevented by as much as 80 percent

The ability of cavity-causing, plaque-forming bacteria to produce acids and stick to teeth, gums, or tongue is significantly inhibited.

Less plaque is formed greatly enhancing general oral health.

Early cavity formation can actually be reversed.
Xylitol is diabetic and hypoglycemic friendly. (2.4cal/gram) (Glycemic index of 7)

Ear infections can be reduced by up to 40 percent.

Mothers can significantly reduce cavities in their children by consistently chewing gym sweetened with 100% xylitol before and after giving birth.

Unattractive tooth scarring and puffy gums that can often occur during orthodontic treatment can be minimized or prevented.

Fresher breath is an additional benefit.

Preventing cavities saves money!

It's safe, simple, enjoyable, and supported by over 25 years of quality research!
